John McPhee’s ‘The Control of Nature’ contains three relatively short
stories about various attempts by society to control or manage natural systems.
Read any one of these and write a short 3-4 page essay exploring the topic
and answering at least one of the following questions:
- Did they succeed in controlling/managing the system? How do you define ‘success’?
- What are the inherent problems in trying to control this system? Are there hidden costs?
- How do you evaluate the risks, costs and benefits of such control/management efforts?
- As a society, should we attempt similar control/management efforts?
Can it be argued that we have a responsibility to do this? Who should
pay for such efforts?
Copies of McPhee's book are on reserve under ESCI 1001 at the Reserve
Desk (lower level)
of the Science & Engineering Library (Walter Library).
